Arsenal supporters have long awaited for this “super quality” that Wenger has mentioned he’s looking for in the transfer window. Finally, this “super quality” has arrived to Arsenal half-hour before the transfer window closes.
Arsenal have signed Mesut Ozil from Real Madrid for a reported club record fee of £42.4 million which destroys Arsenal’s old club record fee of £15 million to sign Andrey Arshavin from Zenit St. Petersburg. Rumors swirling around stated that Arsenal beat both Manchester United and Paris St. Germain for the signing of German International Ozil, if those rumors are true, that makes this deal much more sweeter for Arsenal.
What does Ozil bring to Arsenal? Ozil brings more depth in attacking midfield, not only that, he is now Arsenal’s best player and improves the quality within the squad. Some may say that there is enough depth in midfield and the squad has more pressing needs, such as bringing in a defender or another striker. The fact of the matter is, when you have a player with the world class quality of Ozil available, you have to take advantage of that opportunity. Besides, if you examine the squad, a defender is not that pressing of a need that some may think.
What many forget is that Arsenal had the second best defensive record in the BPL last season, only giving up 37 goals. Arsenal has made no changes to their defense and have the same defenders which helped Arsenal to such an impressive defensive record.
If you check the depth of the defense, Arsenal has three central defenders, Laurent Koscielny, Per Mertesacker, and Thomas Vermaelen, who is currently injured. Arsenal has great cover in both full-back positions, Bacary Sagna and Carl Jenkinson at RB and Kieran Gibbs and Nacho Monreal at LB. Sagna can be used as a emergency CB, which would mean Arsenal has four players who can play in the centre of defense. Also with the addition of Flamini, although a defensive midfielder, he can also provide cover at the full-back positions, if necessary. Combined, there are eight players who can play in the back four. Arsenal have a bit more depth in defense than many may think.
Striker depth may be a different issue since Arsenal only have two strikers, one being Olivier Giroud and the other being a young player with potential, Yaya Sanogo. Despite only having two strikers, Arsenal has players who are capable of playing striker in Theo Walcott and Lukas Podolski. If either of those players are needed to play striker, Arsenal has other players, such as Santi Cazorla and now Mesut Ozil who are capable of playing wide. Even though both Cazorla and Ozil have a tendency of cutting into the middle even if they are deployed out wide, Arsenal can still maintain width through their full-backs and any of their central players who drift out wide since Wenger plays a free-form type of football.
The signing of Ozil should not only lift the spirits of the supporters, but also show the footballing world that there’s a shift in Arsenal’s ambitions. The days of selling their best players for profits seem to be gone. The days of Arsenal showing a lack of ambition seem to be gone. This signing shows that Arsenal now mean business and this should encourage more players of “super quality” to want to come to Arsenal in the future.
Arsenal supporters brace yourselves! Be prepared to see Arsenal retain more possession of the ball. Be prepared to see dazzling, one touch passing to create many more chances. Last but not least, be prepared to see the “super quality” Ozil brings with his passing ability, hopefully for many years to come!
